What does a care manager do?

Healthcare administrators manage, direct, and coordinate health and medical care services in all types of clinical settings, including hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and hospices. They are sometimes referred to as healthcare executives or directors of medical/health services (and the word "healthcare" is often spelled as one word).

These administrators perform leadership roles and oversee all aspects of an institution's care delivery to ensure optimal care for patients. They seek to improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare, manage finances, prepare budgets, hire and manage staff, ensure regulatory compliance, and more.

Salary and job outlook.

Salaries and job prospects for healthcare administrators are very good. According toUnited States Bureau of Labor StatisticsHealthcare and medical services managers earned an average annual salary of $100,980 in 2019. The top 10% earned more than $189,100 a year.

Glass doorreports a lower number, based on an average of 165 actual health care administration jobs, of $72,441. According to another salary information aggregator:pay ratethe average is closer to $69,845. another source,, says the median salary is $78,833. Obviously, these estimates are made based on different criteria and sources of information, so they all differ. But it's safe to say that the pay for healthcare jobs is high.

Even more impressive are the job prospects. HeBLSsays jobs for healthcare and medical services managers are expected to grow by as much as 32% between 2019 and 2029. This compares to an expected 4% increase for all occupations.

How to Write a Resume for Healthcare Administration

A care manager is a senior manager at an institution dedicated to saving lives, so they must reflect the highest level of professionalism. Your resume should be only one page long and include all of the following (and very little else):

  • continued headline
  • Summary/CV profile
  • Department of Labor History
  • Department of Education
  • skills module

The resume header is the attractively designed area at the top of your page that lists your name, occupation, address, phone number, and email address (and maybe a photo and possibly some web links, such as your LinkedIn page).

The header is the easiest part to write and the hardest to design. It's easy to type because you already know your name, address, email address, etc. However, it is the most difficult part to design because there are so many options. You can add a splash of color, innovative design, creative use of typography, and other design options.

The good news is that you can rely on professionally designed templatesto choose a header and overall resume design that's right for you. Find a design you like, click on it and make it your own.

Once you've sorted out your header, you'll only have four other elements left on your page. Let's talk about each of them.

Sample resume/profile

The resume, also known as a profile or personal statement, is your only chance on a resume to describe yourself in your own words as an ideal candidate for the position, so it's critical.

Listed below are your previous jobs, education and skills, but this is a unique opportunity to tell the recruiter everything they need to know about why you're a good fit for the job you're looking for.

You don't have to include the words "I am" or "I have worked" in your resume summary, and in fact, the two to three sentences of your resume don't even have to be complete sentences.

For example, a summary of Batman's resume might read: "Masked crime fighter, virtually unscathed, with extensive experience fighting criminals in Gotham City using a wide variety of weapons, vehicles, and personal combat skills." Note that not a single word is repeated in this Batman profile, and not a single word here is weak or boring.

You may not be the Caped Crusader, but as a healthcare administration professional, you want to present your credentials in the strongest possible terms. Here's an example:

Expert advice

Pass the ATS test

ATS stands forTracking system for applicants, and it is very important to understand what these resume filter programs are. If you're wrong, a computer bot sends your resume to the discard pile. but if you do it right, your resume will climb to the top of the pile like whipped cream.

Larger employers use ATS systems by inputting the critical job qualifications (described by keywords) they look for in each applicant. These keywords are generally similar, if not identical, to the words used in a job ad advertising a job opening.

When resumes go into circulation, the employer enters them into ATS, which immediately searches them for the desired keywords. If your resume doesn't contain words that describe what the employer is looking for, your resume may be rejected without any human review.

That is why it is extremely important to carefully study vacancies and to match the language as much as possible, in order to demonstrate that you are a good fit for the vacancy. This is also why resumes should be living documents that can be adapted to any job that interests you.

Example of health administration employment history

Any serious candidate will need some experience in this field, and this will be reflected in their employment history.

If you've been a successful healthcare administrator for years, you know what to do: Simply list your previous jobs in reverse chronological order, with bullet points below each job describing your achievements and accomplishments in each job.

Be specific and use facts and figures, such as the number of doctors you manage or the number of patients your center has seen. the budget you managed, the percentage increase you achieved, etc.

However, if you don't have experience as a care manager, that doesn't mean you'll never be able to become one. Remember, all presidents got their first job as president without any presidential experience. The same applies to all healthcare administrators. Obviously, relevant experience in this field is needed, but if it were impossible to get any job in the world without experience in the same job, then no one in the world would have a job.

Choosing the best resume format

In most areas, including this one, job seekers do better with a reverse chronological resume format: newest job first, first job last.

There are other options for telling your career story, but you really can't go wrong by listing your most recent and impressive work first and then working back to your first internship.

Example of a teaching resume

Have you been to university; otherwise you wouldn't be here. Therefore, list any colleges or universities you have attended, where they are and the years you have studied, and the degree you have obtained.

Your education records usually appear in reverse chronological order, just like your previous jobs, meaning the highest title appears first. If you have a college degree, where you went to high school is generally not counted.

If you have notable academic credentials, such as a high GPA or membership in an academic honor society, list them under your university. Also mention any special certifications you have obtained in your field.

September 2010 - May 2014
High School Diploma, Loyola High School, Los Angeles

Example of a healthcare management skills module

Even "unskilled workers" need skills, and every resume should include a skills section highlighting the candidate's most salient skills.

Some of these will be "hard skills," such as job-related software knowledge or other experience with technical aspects of the job. And some will be "soft skills," such as communication, problem solving, and attention to detail. Without using resume clichés (such as "team player" or "result-oriented"), name a few of your superpowers, maybe six to eight, to show that you have what it takes to get the job done.

Example of an adaptive skills unit

  • Ability to do many things at once
  • Effective time management
  • Administrative skills
  • Medical terminology
  • COORDINATION project
  • Computer skills
